How To Increase Will Power

Will power is defined as control exerted to do something or it can be a force exerted to restrain a natural impulse. Will power can be seen similar to motivation, discipline, and strength of character. Although it combats laziness and demotivation, each and every one of us has a finite amount of will power that runs thin depending on the circumstances. Fortunately, there are certain techniques you can implement into your life to build and develop will power.

You might ask, why would I need to build will power? Impulse control is extremely important, it is the line that separates laying in your bed for an extra 10 minutes versus getting up and going to the gym. Will power determine the action between reaching for a donut or sticking to your nutritional plan.

If you want to take your life from ordinary to extraordinary, will power is key. Being emotionally triggered and responding to every impulse will not lead to a successful path in most cases.

Will power is like a muscle, the more you work it out the better shape it is in.

1. Resist lower urges
When you have an urge to stay in bed longer, eat junk food, or let your homework pile up do your best to resist these urges. It will not be easy at first, but as long as you are taking the small steps towards your success your will power muscle will improve.

2. Meditation
Meditation is an age-old practice that has been utilized for thousands of years from cultures all over the world. It feels good in the moment, but it also improves your performance in many other parts of your life. Think of it like exercise and training for your brain.

3. Consistent exercise
No surprise, a sound body reflects a sound mind. When you are disciplined enough to get into the gym and hit an extra 15 minutes of cardio or increase the weight by 5 pounds, you are practicing will power. The more you practice the better you become at exerting it.

4. Choose Your Higher Self
Each time you put in a genuine effort you improve your will power. Be honest with yourself, there’s a difference between doing the bare minimum and exerting your full force and creativity when it comes to solving problems and accomplishing goals. Don’t sell yourself short!
